Summary:

Alaska is the largest US state in North America and one of the wealthiest most racially diverse states. Under the recently passed country farm bill Alaska was given the option to use certain grant funds to deploy broadband service to communities who are still using dial-up internet access. Its remote location is the key factor that placed its inhabitants in an economic blind spot and a little behind with technology. The state is on the lookout for more teachers having faced past difficulties filling classrooms with enough teachers. In response to the educator’s crisis the governor proposed forward-funding and an increased in the base student allocation from the three year funding plan to invest more than $1 billion each year for three years in public education. Officials in isolated communities are widely participating to help draft the legislation outline on guidelines for student achievement and qualification for teachers and aides as one of their responses to attract and retain teachers. In rural Alaskan village teachers routinely took subjects that they were not qualified to teach. The main problem lies on proximity between rural villages which are miles apart and even impossible to reach by road. This also makes student transfers from underperforming districts impossible. Broadband service deployment would then allow these areas to offer tutoring and distance learning classes to improve education opportunities of students. The biggest woe of the rural school educators are the children’s poor English language skills having to use their native tongue Yup’ik for primary levels which represents the largest population. Teachers have to learn basic native expressions to be able to relay and convey effective teaching methodology in these remote areas.
