The focus on salary schedule was based on teacher’s level of education and years of experience. California just made it easy for teachers to pursue training and advance degrees at their own pace. Teachers were provided 100% online advance training courses to improve effectiveness at the same time open opportunities for increase of salary. The quality of teachers is seen by the state to be the most important contributing factor to achievements of students regardless of income or background prompting them to allow teachers to hold more than one credential and offer several types of other credentials like multiple subject, single subject, specialist, adult vocational education, special credential (CLAD), and bilingual (BCLAD). California Governor Arnold Shwarzenegger recently required all districts to include teachers’ salaries on each of their school’s annual accountability report cards as part of the students’ performance data to allow spending comparison on pupil funding levels. California Teachers Association on the other hand had been relying on UniServ offices to provide support services to local teachers association all over the state. Teachers are even doing more than teaching at California. They are giving out blood samples as part of the statewide drive on research for cancer causes among Californian women. They also volunteered to participate in a series of questionnaires in collaboration with the California State Teachers Retirement System. Researchers prefer teachers because they are already familiar with the survey techniques and are convenient to locate because of their retirement system. Last October 2007 the governor signed four bills that prevent schools from offering instructions that might have negative interpretations towards transsexuals thereby allowing and promoting homosexuals, bisexual and transsexual inside the classroom. Call it solidarity but it just made students and teachers in the California Area School District participate in the 60 acre woodland habitat for native birds project spearheaded by the Audubon Society’s Schoolground Habitat Enhancement and Restoration Project (SHERP).
