Summary:

District of Columbia acknowledges that teacher quality is affected by working conditions, qualifications and ongoing professional developments. Teachers in this district are not known to bring home fat paychecks. DC schools are constantly looking for teachers who are dedicated. For some decades the public schools system resisted platform reforms and now earned its fame as one of the most troubled in the nation. They are orchestrating attempts to fix the schools by assessing teacher performance as main category to base reward and retain effective teachers. Fixing schools in inner city education is most disheartening when teachers lack the skills and the expertise to motivate their students. School officials were even planning to close and consolidate some schools in order to tackle growing budget deficit and decline in enrollment. DC has OSSE provide great resources for parents, teachers, and student’s financial aid to higher education. It is also in the process of developing policies and programs for education improvement and public information on school choice. OSSE was given the authority to administer USDA food and nutrition grant program. Committed to finding fair and meaningful ways to improve the school system, the district has implemented a breakfast program as a means to help students coming from low income families jumpstart their day with a nutritious meal. Students either received free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Understanding and addressing the challenge of teachers and education in DC would mean research, survey, forums, and public information on budget appropriations. The district has widely adopted information technology to improve their abilities to meet responsibilities and support a wide variety of public service that fosters educational and cultural development. NCRC partnered with DCPS for their home ownership initiative to assist teachers obtain affordable workforce housing in the city. Shortage of teachers is a national outcry but the District of Columbia is looking for more than credentials they are looking for honest and dedicated teachers to start improving the system.
