Summary:

Kansas State is working to develop more programs and provide alternative routes to teacher certification. Since market competition is at work even on the education sector, shortage in math and science teachers are getting difficult to fill each year. Some problems noted are the tough working conditions and low salary level which burns out special education teachers. More of these teachers seek work and find other opportunities to meet simple budget economics. To help their teachers, Kansas Division of Continuing Education offered onsite courses like ESL endorsement in elementary and secondary education and Family Development Credential Program. ESL courses provided by Kansas State University is offered only to teachers certified to teach in Kansas which is a distance education meant to complete ESL endorsements for the participants. Family Development Credential Program is a research based comprehensive curriculum on family support principles designed to reorient service interaction to the family support approach. Reality states that beginning teachers now have better academic credentials than their predecessors because of the development in programs and curriculum in the education system created through time. Hence it follows that tougher requirements were made at all levels from the federal government to the local teachers college meant to improve offers in matters of benefits and salary which is seen to entice more students to teaching. Geography plays a major role in bending some rules in the school system. Being a very urban area Kansas state expanded its effort in educating its students by making homeschooling legal. Homeschoolers are considered as non-accredited private school and is legally registered as such. Teachers teaching in these schools do not require certification but competence may be determined with any certification or license they may present. Furthermore, Kansas is not so keen in requiring schools to provide instructions in health either. They don’t even require high school students to complete coursework in health education to graduate. The state has not formally adopted standards yet and does not have a required or suggested curriculum. Teachers in Kansas may avail of the Kansas Teacher Education Scholarship Program from which they are eligible of up to $3,000 allowance each semester for those who studies full time.
