One of the programs created by Maine Department of Education is Maine Literacy Partnership. Maine Literacy partnership is a professional development program that assigns each affiliated school a full time literacy coach. It aims to support teachers in grades K6 refine their literacy teaching. This University of Maine based partnership comprehensive model worked to attain higher literacy outcomes of students by increasing communication skills. Maine Research Internships for Teachers and Students (MERITS) is a program that facilitate placement of interested teachers and students in science and technology to laboratory or field settings. The Maine Teacher of the Year Program serves to honor all the excellent teachers in Maine by recognizing the most outstanding teacher annually. In School Administration District #3, parent involvement programs were created to involve parents in curricular and instructional planning. The focus is to draw parents into schools and include them in their children’s interactive learning experience. This is meant to improve home-school relations in geographically dispersed rural districts of Maine. Maine Department of Education allows home schooling but requires the parents or guardian to submit a letter or notice of intent to home school the child for any desired particular year maximum of 175 days. The program shall provide annual assessment of the student’s progress. It shall also provide instruction in the required subject areas by grade level. Adult education was also created to promote educational opportunities for all adults. The efforts of Maine state is focus on educating both child and adult learners to improve the community’s way of living, open up more work opportunities for the adult, and provide qualified graduates to help improve the economy of the state. Income comes from investors but they will hesitate to invest if workforce is not qualified and seen to lack required skills.
