The certificate is earned through completion of the Master Teacher of Economics Program. The program is provided by Jackson based nonprofit organization Mississippi Council of Economic Education to help teachers teach students become economically and financially literate. The concept is to instill the idea that economics isn’t all about money, it is all about choices and simple budget mathematics of income versus expenditures. Mississippi has also developed the second version of the Mississippi Curriculum Test which is expected to be more rigorous and comprehensive. This is the tool used by the state to gauge performance levels of the schools and determine their compliance with the NCLB act. The fact still stands: for children to make the grade, parents need to see the importance of their contribution to helping the child do their own homework and developing their own study methods. Students need help to succeed and so Mississippi is continually working on parents to help them recognize the importance of their roles in their children’s academic success. As continued growth in economy springs from better education in the state, the Teach Mississippi Institute poses as an alternative to the regular teacher preparation route for a Mississippi teacher’s license. This is applicable for teachers teaching in the secondary grade 7 to 12. This is a five year renewable Mississippi teacher license. Another program helping both teachers and students in Mississippi is the Mississippi Teacher Corps which is very similar to the Peace Corps. This is a two year program that recruits college graduates to teach in the Mississippi Delta designed for non-education majors. The program offers a list of benefits for the teachers training including issuance of certification, full scholarship for the Master’s Degree and channel for job placements.
