Knowledge comes with good food and proper nutrition intake. South Dakota Department of Education emphasis is on students’ nutrition. Special Milk Program is available for students who enrolled in schools without federal school meal program. Students across the state eat a nutritionally balanced, low cost or sometimes free lunch. The National School Lunch program has been unfailing in its effort to provide school meals that complies with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Schools wanting to implement menu plan nutrient analysis may request for information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Children are also eligible to receive free or reduced price breakfast through their School Breakfast Program. Health is wealth as a healthy body is a prerequisite to maintaining social development, self expression, stress relief and producing students who excel. Physical Education school curriculum teaches students to lead a physically active lifestyle and help them realize the value of regular exercise as a lifelong activity. A random sample of YRBS questionnaire consisting of items assessing priority health risk behaviors are being given to grades 9 -12 including ungraded and out of school programs every two years. The questionnaire was devised to assist the Office of Educational Services and Support department of South Dakota to develop resources and plan successful interventions that impact youth behavior. School health Matters is a training course offered through Dakota Digital Network for teachers, parents and community members. The program is provided free of charge on different session dates covering a variety of topics but fees for college credit is already the responsibility of the participant. South Dakota Department of Education Wellness Policy rack cards promote healthy vending of snacks and drinks to eating more fruits and vegetables. Learning is a matter of choice and the state wanted to be as flexible as they can be in meeting these choices and providing quality education. South Dakota Virtual High School provides a variety of courses in a flex schedule students may choose to take on their own time. Registration is made through their home school district. Digital Dakota Network is a statewide interactive video communications that makes use of compressed digital technology designed to increase access to education and business for instruction, training, meetings and presentation purposes. South Dakota still allows homeschooling as an alternative instruction but parents are required to file an application for public school exemption certificate to be obtained from their local school district. Education is a matter of state responsibility and competing with homeschooling has just been made easier with the establishment of virtual schools.
